What does phase tolerance mean?

What does phase tolerance mean?

Tolerance is the range within which the phase is allowed to deviate from the exact angle. It determines whether an aspect is powerful enough, and also determines which configurations should go into the main line and which should only be used as backgrounds.

Tolerance determines whether the phase is powerful or not

Phase does not only exist at exactly 0, 60, 90, 120, or 180 degrees. Tolerance is the range within which deviation from the precise angle is allowed. For example, two planets that are 92 degrees apart may still be in a square; but the farther apart, the weaker the effect is usually.

When reading the tape, the smaller the tolerance, the stronger the evidence. Especially when it comes to the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Ascendant, and personal planets, close aspects can often enter the main line.

Different objects have different tolerances

The sun and moon are luminous bodies with high weight and can usually have wider orbs than asteroids and fixed stars. Personal planetary aspects also enter into daily experience more easily than distant sensitive points. The tolerances for asteroids, Arabian points, and fixed stars usually need to be tightened, otherwise the disk will be filled with noise.

This is not a mechanical numbers game, but a weighted judgment. The more central the point, the more it can handle a slightly wider phase; the more auxiliary the point, the more accurate it is.

You can refer to the wide phase, but don’t grab the main line

Wide aspects are not completely ineffective, but they should not easily overwhelm tight aspects. If the theme of a wide aspect connection is repeated many times in the chart, it can be used as a supplement; if it exists in isolation, it is not suitable for drawing strong conclusions.

The problem with many templated articles is that they explain all phases equally, causing the really important configurations to be submerged.

How to verify when returning to the horoscope

After opening the phase table, sort by Orb from small to large. Read the closest aspects first, and then screen whether they involve the sun, moon, ascendant, ascendant, Venus, Mars, Mercury, and angular houses. Finally, place the broad, non-repetitive phases on the background layer so they don’t take away from the subject.

An orb is the distance allowed from an exact aspect

Orb is a methodological choice about how far an aspect may be from exact before it is considered active. There is no single universal orb for every planet, aspect, chart, or tradition. State the orb, whether the aspect is applying or separating, the planets involved, and whether angles or luminaries justify a different allowance.

Closer does not automatically mean more important

Exactness can increase attention, but condition, house relevance, rulership, repetition, and the chart question also matter. A wide aspect to an angle may be more visible than a close aspect between irrelevant points for the question. Do not use orb as a numerical ranking system without context.

Case: a wide aspect should not carry a dramatic claim alone

Imagine a seven-degree aspect between Mercury and Pluto in a chart about communication, while a close Mercury-Saturn aspect also exists. The wide contact may add a layer of intensity, but the close aspect and house condition may explain the observable method more directly. Compare the claims instead of selecting the most dramatic keyword.

Contrast: technical contact versus interpretive priority

A technically valid aspect can still be secondary. A strict orb does not prove an event, personality, or psychological diagnosis. Do not widen or narrow the orb after seeing the biography. Decide the method before interpretation and document exceptions.

Verification: run the same chart under declared orbs

Record the exact distance, orb policy, chart point, question, and evidence. Compare a strict and a wider setting, then identify which conclusions survive both. If the story changes entirely with a small orb adjustment, state that sensitivity rather than hiding it.

Boundary for orbs

Orbs cannot create certainty, repair an inaccurate birth time, or replace professional evidence. Do not use a wide orb to make a frightening prediction. Use transparent settings, calibrated claims, and present facts.

Orb application: declare the threshold before looking for confirmation

Choose the orb by aspect, planet, angle, and tradition before reading the biography. Record the exact distance and compare strict and broad settings. Keep only the interpretation that survives the stated method, or clearly label the claim as sensitive to the orb.

Orb review: give priority to relevance over drama

A close aspect can be technically exact and still irrelevant to the question. Rank contacts by the planet’s function, house, ruler, angle, and observable evidence. Do not widen the orb simply to include a desired story. Transparent omission is better than false precision.

Orb final review: report sensitivity instead of hiding it

If the interpretation appears only under a wide orb or changes when the threshold changes, say so. Prioritize the close, relevant, repeated contacts and mark the rest as secondary. A transparent limitation is stronger than a dramatic claim built on a flexible number.

Orb long review: uncertainty belongs in the result

When a claim depends on a wide orb, compare it with the close contacts and state the degree of confidence. Ask whether the biography supports the aspect independently of the threshold. If not, keep it as a possible nuance rather than a central conclusion. The reader deserves to know which part of the interpretation is technically sensitive.

Orb final method: report the strongest conclusion and the sensitive conclusion separately

State which interpretation survives a strict orb and which appears only under a wider allowance. Explain the evidence for each and do not give them equal weight. This lets readers understand the method’s uncertainty and prevents a broad technical choice from becoming a frightening or flattering certainty.

Orb final synthesis: a narrow method protects the conclusion

Separate contacts that survive a strict orb from those that appear only under a broad allowance. State the uncertainty and the evidence for each. If the story changes with the threshold, keep it secondary. Technical transparency is part of professional writing. Never let a flexible threshold become a reason to overstate risk or promise. The reader should be able to see exactly what the method includes and what it leaves uncertain. Use the closest relevant contact as the anchor for the reading. Keep the broad contact as a possible nuance, not the main claim. Review the setting before publication. Do not hide uncertainty in confident language.

Orb is a confidence filter, not a pass-or-fail stamp

An orb is the distance between an observed aspect and its exact geometric angle. It helps decide how loudly that aspect should speak, but it does not decide whether a person is good, bad, compatible, or doomed. A tight contact between relevant planets usually deserves more attention than a wide one, yet the practical weight also depends on the planets, the aspect, angularity, house rulers, chart repetition, and whether the question is natal, transit, or synastry. A table is a starting filter for conclusion strength.

Mechanism: change conclusion strength as the evidence widens

Read orb together with function and context. A close natal contact to the Sun, Moon, chart ruler, or an angle can describe a recurring personal circuit; a wider contact may be useful background if the same theme repeats elsewhere. In a transit, the exact pass and applying/separating motion matter for timing. In synastry, a close personal-planet contact may be felt strongly, but both natal charts and observed reciprocity still decide the relationship. Do not import a natal orb rule into every technique without checking the method.

Worked case: choose the main line without deleting the background

Imagine a fictional chart with Moon trine Jupiter at a wider orb and Mercury square Saturn at a close orb. The first may describe an available emotional resource, while the second may more consistently shape the person's self-editing or fear of being wrong. Test both against dated examples: how the person receives help, how they write under pressure, and what happens after feedback. If the wider Moon-Jupiter theme appears in multiple houses or rulers, retain it as support; if it appears nowhere else, do not let a generous interpretation outrank the tighter repeated pattern.

Contrast, verification, and boundary: a wide aspect is not false, only quieter

The common extremes are 'wide aspects do nothing' and 'every listed aspect is equally decisive.' Use the phase table as a noise filter, then record aspect, orb, planets, houses, rulers, technique, repeated theme, evidence, and confidence level. Recalculate when birth time or house system changes, and lower the claim when the data are uncertain. Astrology cannot make medical, legal, financial, employment, or safety decisions; orb controls how cautiously a symbolic statement should be made.
