What do the Ten Gods do in a Bazi chart?
What exactly are the Ten Gods?
The Ten Gods are the map of relationships between the day master and the other five elements. This article will further bring the concept back to structure, judgment and real-life scenarios.
Ten Gods is a relationship map
The Ten Gods are not mysterious terms, but the functional relationship between the day master and the other five elements. It helps you break down "I" and the external world into ten readable interactions.
How should the Ten Gods division of labor be understood?
Bi Jie favors the same kind and boundaries, Food and Injury favors output and expression, Wealth favors resources and exchange, Official Kill favors rules and pressure, and Seal favors support and absorption.
Learn the functions before memorizing the names
It's easy to get confused by just memorizing the names, but it will be much smoother if you focus on the functions first. You first know what it is doing, and then remember what it is called.
The Ten Gods are not absolutely good or bad
The same ten gods will behave differently when placed in different structures. The quality is not in the name, but in whether it is in the right place.
Why must the Ten Gods be read around the day master?
The Ten Gods are not fixed objects; they describe relationships relative to the day master. Apart from the day master, there is no such thing as calamity, Eating God and Hurting Officer, wealth, Officer and Seven Killings, or seal. For example, the same "wood" may be Bijie to the day master of Jia Wood, Yin to the day master of Bing Fire, and Official Kill to the day master of Wu Earth. The names of the ten gods are not names of objects, but names of relationships.
The five groups of ten gods can be understood like this first
Bi Jie answered "How do I get along with others of my kind", Shi Shang answered "How do I output and express", Cai answered "How do I deal with resource and reality exchange", Guan Sha answered "How do I face rules, pressure and goals", and Yin answered "How do I absorb, understand and gain support". Grasp these five groups of functions first, and then subdivide the pros and cons, which will be much more stable than memorizing ten names directly.
Proper and Partial forms are not simple good or bad
Positive wealth is not necessarily better than partial wealth, official official is not necessarily better than Qisha, and correct seal is not necessarily better than partial seal. Positive side is more about the way of expression: stability or flexibility, order or pressure, regular nourishment or special absorption. When judging, you should look at whether it matches the sun master, moon order, pattern, and time layer, rather than whether there is "positive" in the name.
If the ten gods fall in different positions, their meanings will change.
The same ten gods are visible in the heavenly stems, hidden in the earthly branches, close to the sun, and far away in the year pillar, but they are read in different ways. The revealing branch is easier to express explicitly, the Tibetan branch is more like the underlying structure; the close position to the sun master makes it easier to enter the core experience, and the far position is more like background influence. The ten gods don’t just look at whether they exist, but also where they appear, how they appear, and whether they have root energy.
Read the Ten Gods as a sentence, not as isolated words
The mature judgment of the Ten Gods is not "you have wounded officials, so what", but "the food wounds in this plate are revealed in a certain position and are affected by a certain force, indicating that the output method is likely to appear in a certain form." Only by reading Ten Gods into a complete sentence will it naturally include conditions, positions and boundaries, and will not become a templated assertion.
The ten gods should be read as functional chains first, not as human characters first.
Bi Jie, Eating God and Hurting Officer, Wealth, Official Kill, and Seal are not five scattered labels, but a functional chain: how do I stand up for myself, how do I express myself externally, how do I handle resources, how do I face the rules, and how do I absorb support. The deeper the Ten Gods reads, the less he will stop at "You resemble a certain person" and start asking "How does this power work in the chart?"
In practice, which Ten Gods group is leading?
When reading the Ten Gods in full, instead of explaining all ten gods equally, you should first find out which group has the most dominance: Is there a certain group that appears repeatedly?Does any group receive seasonal support, appear openly, and have roots? Is there a certain group that doesn't appear much, but is stuck in a key position between the Sun Master and the Moon Order? Grasp the main group first, then the whole board will have the main line.
The same Ten Gods group can have mature or unbalanced expressions
A strong Eating God and Hurting Officer may be due to high expression and production, or it may be impatience, conflict, and excessive consumption; a strong official injury may be a sense of order and goal, or a sense of oppression and long-term tension; a strong Yin may be learning ability and protection system, or it may be retreating into the comfort zone. Depth judgment is not to report the names of the ten gods, but to judge which level of expression this group of powers is currently at.
Ten Gods must eventually return to their real roles
After reading Ten Gods, you need to translate it into real-life characters and actions. Wealth is not just "money", it may also be projects, customers, life resources, and relationship management; official killing is not just "boss", but may also be rules, assessments, and identity responsibilities; seal is not just "reading", but may also be methods, protection, and support systems. Whether the Ten Gods can really be implemented depends on whether you can complete this step of translation.
Ten Gods are relational functions, not ten personality types
The Ten Gods name how another element relates to the day master: support, output, resources, authority, and peer dynamics are functional descriptions that change with the reference stem. A label can describe a person, a task, an institution, a resource, or an internal habit depending on the question and the rest of the chart. Read whether the relationship is revealed, rooted, supported, excessive, or connected to a useful outlet. Do not turn Wealth into “money,” Officer into “success,” or Seal into “intelligence” without explaining the chain. A strong reading preserves the relationship and then translates it into a concrete scene.
Case: one Ten God appears in three different scenes
Imagine a fictional Wealth relationship. In a business question it may become pricing, customers, cash flow, or shared resources; in a relationship question it may become responsibility and material exchange; in a learning question it may describe the need to turn knowledge into a usable product. The same label does not choose one scene in advance. Check the question, the day-master capacity, the surrounding Output or Officer path, and the active time layer. If the chart repeatedly supports a resource-flow hypothesis but the person has no market access or is already overloaded, state the opportunity and the constraint together. Ten Gods organize evidence; they do not replace context.
Translate a Ten God only after naming the question
Use a three-step translation: identify the relative function, identify the structure that supports or obstructs it, then choose the real scene that matches the question. Wealth in a resource question is not read in exactly the same way as Wealth in a relationship question. Officer in a workplace question may concern rules or responsibility, while in a personal question it may describe pressure and accountability. The translation should contain a condition and a disconfirming sign. Without those, a Ten Gods keyword is only a label.
Verification and boundary: a Ten God is not a person label
Verify the translation by naming the relative function, the evidence that repeats it, and the real behavior or situation that could disconfirm it. If the question changes from career to relationship, translate again rather than copying the same meaning. Ten Gods cannot prove another person’s motives, diagnose a condition, guarantee money, or replace legal, medical, financial, safety, or professional judgment. Keep the relationship useful by keeping its conditions visible.
