Core meaning

Transformation — one chapter ends so the next can begin.

Despite the imagery, Death rarely means literal death. It marks the end of a cycle and the beginning of another — the molting, the composting, the necessary release. The card appears when something is already over and only your grip is delaying the next chapter. The work is to let the ending complete.

How to read it

Start with the spread position. Death in a challenge position is not read the same way as Death in an advice or outcome position.

Then check upright or reversed. Upright usually shows direct movement; reversed often shows blockage, excess, avoidance, delay, or internalization.

Finally compare nearby cards. A supportive card can stabilize Death; a disruptive card can make the same archetype sharper, more urgent, or more costly.

Upright reading

Endings, transformation, rebirth, transitions, and the clean closure that makes new beginnings possible.

Read it through the question, position, and nearby cards.

Reversed reading

Resistance to necessary change, fear of endings, or prolonged suffering from not letting go.

Read it through the question, position, and nearby cards.
