They describe conditional effects on balance, while Use God identifies the main adjustment route for a particular structure and question. A God of Joy may support that route without being the primary medicine; a taboo god may aggravate the bottleneck without being universally bad. The same element can be helpful in one layer and disruptive in another. Begin with the Day Master, season and actual bottleneck, then state what the force changes, what it depends on and how reality could confirm or weaken the claim. This prevents a symbolic label from becoming a lifestyle prescription.

Start from the Day Master and map the visible Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, hidden stems, pillar positions and Ten Gods relationships. A force in the Month Branch may shape the seasonal condition; a revealed stem may be easier to observe; a hidden relationship may require a real channel before it becomes available. ‘Adapt’ means the force helps the structure perform its needed function; ‘conflict’ means it competes with or worsens that function. God of Joy and taboo god are interpretive labels applied after the chart evidence, not properties that float independently of a pillar. Keep the chart fact, the school’s method and the practical conclusion separate.

The Month command changes the starting climate and the strength of elements, but it cannot by itself decide joy or taboo. Ask whether the Day Master is rooted, whether support can be received, and whether the structure is cold, hot, dry, damp, compressed or scattered. Use seasonal language only when it changes the mechanism. A force that warms may be helpful in a cold structure yet excessive in an already heated one; a force that drains may create useful output in one question and remove needed capacity in another. If the birth time or calendar conversion is uncertain, lower confidence in claims built on the Hour Pillar or fine timing.

Inspect roots, revealed and hidden stems, generating and controlling routes, combinations, clashes, harms and transformations. A supporting element is not useful if it has no channel or if the Day Master cannot receive it. Resource may help study but create over-preparation; Output may open expression but drain a weak structure; Wealth may connect a plan to exchange but add obligations; Officer may provide order but increase pressure. Name the relationship before assigning God of Joy or taboo god. Explain whether it supports Use God, competes with it, or changes the bottleneck. This is more accurate than saying an element is permanently auspicious or inauspicious.

Pattern and Use God enter after the structure and main adjustment route are clear. The God of Joy can be a secondary force that helps Use God work, while a taboo god can be the force that blocks, over-amplifies or reverses the adjustment. Different schools may rank the roles differently, so state the method rather than presenting one vocabulary as universal. Do not equate joy with more of an element: support can become excess. Do not equate taboo with avoidance of every object associated with a symbol. The test is functional—does the proposed force improve capacity, circulation, output, order or recovery for this question? If not, downgrade the label.

The natal chart supplies the baseline; Da Yun and Liu Nian can make a force accessible, excessive, blocked or costly. An element that supports the natal structure may become too strong in a luck period; a force that was difficult in the natal chart may provide a missing channel when circumstances change. Do not describe a God of Joy year as certain success or a taboo year as certain harm. Compare the time layer with the natal bottleneck, the person’s capacity and the institution around them. Step two: the Hai Month Branch creates a winter Water context, while Wu gives a visible Fire root; the structure still needs the other roots, stems and relationships checked before naming any role. Step three: suppose the selected method proposes Fire as the main Use God for a work question because it restores usable output, with Wood as a supporting God of Joy because it can feed that route. Step four: Water may be a taboo hypothesis only if it further suppresses capacity in this context, not because Water is always bad. In a later Wood-heavy period, Wood may shift from helpful support to excessive preparation if no output is completed. Verify the roles through deadlines, completed work, energy, feedback and practical access—not through colors or objects.

Two people can share a similar balance question but need different adaptations. One has a stable team and enough recovery time, so additional Output may help launch a service. Another has unstable health and no support, so the same Output becomes overwork; a Resource route may be the better immediate support. A God of Joy cannot create money, permission, skill or safety, and a taboo god cannot explain every setback. Age, work, family duty, culture and institutional power change the container. Compare the claimed function with the actual question and constraints before recommending more or less of any element.

Common errors include treating God of Joy as personal preference, calling a missing element taboo, using colors or objects as substitutes for structural analysis, applying one list to every life domain, or letting Shen Sha override the Four Pillars. Review in order: verify calendar and pillars; identify Day Master; read Month command and roots; map Ten Gods and the bottleneck; state Use God; test supporting and conflicting routes; add timing; compare dated reality. Suppose a fictional chart is too dry and blocked. Water may be favorable because it improves flow, while additional Fire may be unfavorable at that stage. In a different topic or later period, the same Fire could help visibility or output. Likes and taboos must therefore be tied to the problem, level, and real entrance.
